I have the best job in the world. Even if it’s late: I’m home, baby sleeping, his breathing on the monitor. Sometimes I can’t believe people pay me to take their photo.
I’ll try my best to describe a second of my life which I could not capture on camera: Four of us have been friends since 8th grade. By now, most of us have families, so there’s 8 of us in a small room, plus four young children. Youngest baby is crying and being rocked by his mom while her dad plays the electric guitar nearby. Oldest kid (3 years old) is running screaming around the room while everyone is getting ready to go home. It was a loud, chaotic, happy, totally unphotographable moment. Made me glad we’re in this together. Our planned gatherings never seem to work out, and the unplanned ones (like today’s) are always the best.
That moment when you’re letting your frustration turn to tears and your baby starts laughing at your sobs.
I’m so lucky to have shared these first few months of motherhood with not one, but four of my closest friends.
Walking out of the supermarket with Carla today, our babies close to our hearts in their carriers, she handed me two pieces of chocolate. As I tasted the warm, soft, bittersweet candy I got that fuzzy once-in-a-lifetime-happy feeling. Because we’ll never be new mothers again, because we’ll probably never be mothers at the same time again, because our afternoon stroll today was just so… perfect once we tasted chocolate.
So today I started the challenge. It is a special date because it’s the first day of my son’s eighth month of life. I began the day looking out for happy moments and there were so many it was very hard to choose one to photograph. The hard part was catching them. I’m a pretty busy mom, and no, I don’t have my phone at hand all day because if I’m not holding my baby, I’m either making food, eating food, cleaning food off my clothes, the floor, the chairs… or at the computer working.
Today I realized I’m happy most of the day. And most of the happiest moments of my day cannot be caught except by my mind’s eye.
Anyway, if you’re interested, I decided to post my photos on Instagram.
